Monitoring the temperature on saw blades in wood industry

One of the most common problems in the wood industry is the unplanned replacement of saw blades, which causes machine downtimes that ultimately halt production and the entire connected supply chain. By using a Neuron IR sensor, the temperature of the blade is continuously monitored, and the cutting speed can be adjusted to match the characteristics of the saw and the blade. This leads to planned blade replacements without interrupting production. Better knowledge of the temperature also leads to higher productivity, as the saw can be operated at the optimal cutting speed at all times.

The Challenge
Wood division into planks, using a saw, before planing.
A blade that becomes too hot will lose its tension, meaning it needs to be replaced. Such replacements lead to production stoppages and reduced productivity.
The production stoppage on the saw will propagate to the subsequent stages of the production process, such as planing and packaging operations, causing the company to be unable to produce while the blade is being replaced. Naturally, this results in significant financial losses in any sawmill.

Solution

Neuron IR sensors are installed on the machinery, pointed at the blades.
The blade's temperature is displayed to the operator, who can adjust the cutting speed to the optimal rate based on the current production and the blade's condition.
The Neuron IoT system also provides alarms to operators if temperatures exceed pre-set thresholds. This allows the saw to be used with temperature monitoring without requiring an operator to constantly check the blade's temperature on a display.
Any blade will deteriorate over time. The operator will notice this by observing an increase in the blade's temperature. The cutting speed can then be reduced to continue production without the blade losing its tension. The blade replacement will then take place during a planned production break, without affecting the rest of the production line.
